Government Shutdown Looming

8 04 2011

It is less than 12 hours away from the possibility of the government shutting down. What will impact you if the our nation’s leaders cannot come to an agreement on approving the 2011 budget? How long will the government remain shut down?

Here are a few things that will be affected:

  • Federal workers will be furloughed
  • National Parks will be closed
  • Government contractors will be have to stop their work
  • Military salaries will be delayedTrash pickup will be suspended in the District of Columbia
  • There will be no new approvals of Federal Housing Administration loans
  • There will be no new approvals of Small Business Administration loans
  • The IRS will not be processing paper tax returns or refunds
  • There will be no issuing of passports or visas
  • The Department of Health and Human Services, the Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of Health will operate on a much smaller scale.

How long will this last?

Should the government have to shutdown it is not expected to last very long, but this is of course, speculation. The last government shutdown went from December 1995 to January of 1996 and lasted 21 days. Let’s hope a decision can be reached regarding the budget before midnight!
